CONFIRMED: Edinburgh Rugby Sign Olympic Gold Medallist Viliame Mata

Edinburgh Rugby have confirmed the signing of Fijian Olympic winning 2nd row Viliame Mata on a 2 year contract subject to medical and visa.

The announcement confirms the rumour first broken by this site back in July and signals a new attacking intent from under-pressure head coach Alan Solomons.

The mobile lock and back row will come to the capital club full of confidence having won Olympic gold at Rio last month, and will add much needed depth following the departure of Alex Toolis to the Melbourne Rebels over the summer.

Despite going into the tournament as one of the fringe players, he went on take a starring role in the 43-7 Final victory over Team GB with a well worked try. His arrival in Scotland means both pro clubs can boast Olympic medallists thanks to Glasgow Warrior Mark Bennett picking up a Silver Medal in the same match.

My goal was to win the gold medal for Fiji and we got it. Now my goal is to perform well for my new team.

What do you think of the signing? Is this good news for Edinburgh?
